Description
Parainema — Washed · Matagalpa, Nicaragua (El Quetzal Estate).
A disease-resistant single varietal with a clean, approachable cup. Tasting notes: citric and fruity with a creamy body, sweet panela, and chocolate. Cupping score 83 (Beneficio San Miguel Arcángel, Jan 2026).
About the varietal
Parainema is a hybrid developed by IHCAFE (Instituto Hondureño del Café) — a cross between Villa Sarchi and Timor Hybrid (T-5296). It combines the compact plant structure and cup quality of Villa Sarchi with the Timor lineage's resistance to coffee leaf rust (roya), which is why it earns a place on the estate alongside our more delicate varietals.
At El Quetzal's cloud-forest elevation we look for clean, sweet cups with stone fruit and chocolate — and the 2025 lot cupped in line with that.
