When most people think of iconic coffee varietals, Yellow Catuai often flies under the radar. But ask any seasoned roaster or third-wave café owner—and you’ll hear a different story.
At El Quetzal Coffee, our Yellow Catuai coffee is grown with obsessive care in the highlands of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Whether you’re sourcing for your roasting program or curating your next at-home single-origin showcase, this is a coffee that punches above its weight.
What Is Yellow Catuai?
Yellow Catuai is a compact, high-yield Arabica hybrid created by crossing Mundo Novo and Caturra. It was originally developed for its resilience—but in the right conditions, it becomes something else entirely: bright, expressive, and full of character.
When grown at altitude and processed intentionally, Yellow Catuai transforms into a cup that surprises even seasoned cuppers—often beating out more “famous” varietals in blind tastings.
Why the Matagalpa Region Elevates Yellow Catuai
Our Yellow Catuai is grown exclusively in the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua, one of the country's most prized growing zones—and for good reason.
🌄 Elevation and Microclimate
Matagalpa offers elevations from 1,100–1,600 MASL, ideal for slow cherry development. The cool nights and warm days help Yellow Catuai develop dense structure and complex sugars, translating to better flavor clarity in the cup.
🌧️ Volcanic Soil and Steady Rainfall
The region’s volcanic soil and predictable rainfall offer rich nutrients and water regulation—exactly what this varietal needs to thrive without stress. These growing conditions bring out the bright acidity and tropical sweetness Yellow Catuai is known for.
🌗 Large Diurnal Swings
Drastic day-to-night temperature swings slow down ripening, giving our coffee cherries time to fully develop, producing a balanced, nuanced, and fruit-forward profile that consistently impresses Q-graders and roasters alike.
How Yellow Catuai Tastes
This is a lively, structured, fruit-forward cup—perfect for highlighting origin, varietal, and process.
In the cup, expect:
-
Mandarin orange, pineapple, lychee or green apple acidity
-
Honey and brown sugar sweetness
-
Medium silky body, with a clean finish
Whether brewed as a hand pour, espresso, or filter—or roasted light to let the origin shine—this coffee is built to stand out.
Roasters: Why You’ll Want to Carry It
Roasters love our Yellow Catuai because it:
-
Performs beautifully across light-to-medium roast ranges
